Lunch Pail Banker
VP Candidate Joe Biden has received considerable attention for the fact that he takes the Amtrak train from Delaware to DC everyday. Today I’m taking that same train, but getting off in Philly for a few visits to clients in PA.
Just call me a lunch pail banker.

Welcome to Anthropologie
Many of you probably remember Tracy’s decision to quit her job at Geneva shortly after we moved up to Manhattan. I asked members of the blogaudience to contribute thoughts in a sort of Open Source Job Hunt. We did receive a few suggestions, and also had good conversations with family and friends during which we realized more and more how much it would benefit Tracy to find a role which...

Thoughts on the economy
I interrupt the usual stream of events from our life in New York to bring a few thoughts on the current economy… In light of the woe in the financial markets, today has brought a rather entertaining and enlightening chain of emails from my former roommates from UNC. We took a break from our usual daily fare of Fantasy Football trash talk and personal insults to take a hard look at the...
Birthday Girl
As many of you already know, Tracy turned 27 on Saturday. We had a great time celebrating the big day with Don and Donna. In addition to Ellis Island we made sure to appropriately party by upping our caloric intake – first via burgers at Shake Shack, and capped off with cupcakes from Crumbs.
As many of you are aware, I had planned a somewhat different type of gift for Tracy this year. Knowing...

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave
New York can be an intimidating place. I remember thinking that as I packed up our Budget truck for the trip up I-95 to our new home. We didn’t know quite what to expect. What did we know? There would be people. Lots and lots of people. Lots of people from all over who knew nothing of us. There would be new sights. New experiences. New opportunities. Above all else New York...
Simple Pleasures...
I’m pretty pumped. We have a microwave.
I know what you’re thinking - “Zack, is the addition of an everyday appliance really blogworthy? And “pumped”? What has happened to you in NYC?”
Of course, none of you carried this microwave through Hurricane Hanna-induced wind and rain.
And you didn’t try and drill holes into the wall above the stove only to...

The Mess on Wall Street
More than a few of our friends have contacted us wondering how the craziness going on in the current financial markets is/isn’t affecting my bank. Thankfully, we are very well insulated from the crisis at the moment - with no direct exposure to Lehman, AIG, etc. For us, as long as the venture capital markets continue to be liquid (which they are, and most likely will continue to be due...

CAT WHITEHILL
Of course, I’d be lying if I made it sound like Cat made a special trip to NYC to see her dear friends again (though I’m sure she would!) She came to the city for more exciting reasons, as the new Women’s Professional Soccer league was launched in a star-studded ceremony...

We had a great weekend with my family!
For those of you who have forgotten the majestic tunes of Mary Poppins from your youth (or are too proud to sing along to the title of a blog post), the above is a tribute to the lovely weekend we shared with my family.
As was noted in detail in previous posts, the weekend actually began a bit early on Thrusday night as...

Remembering 9/11
It’s weird to be in New York as we remember seven years ago.
I’ve often asked people where they were when they heard the news. I was in a Drama 15 class and the girl next to me was wearing headphones and listening to live radio updates during class. I thought she was just being disrespectful to the professor and class. I was obviuosly wrong.
I can remember leaving the class and...
Happy Birthday Jen!
Today is a momentous day for my lovely sister-in-law Jennifer Huitsing, as she officially crosses over the hill (or at least the first hill), and turns 30.
I admire the way Jennifer cares for people, fights for the causes she’s passionate about, and the way she and Jason are raising two of the cutest kids on the planet. The Huitsing clan is enjoying a late summer week at Ocean Isle...
Lazy Weekend
There’s a lot of weekends when we will be super busy either entertaining guests or gallavanting around the city taking in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.
This weekend was not one of those weekends.
And it was awesome.
That’s not to say that we don’t love it when we get to entertain and have a full schedule. It couldn’t be farther from the truth - perhaps our...
Date Night
New York is called the city that never sleeps. But it could also be called the city that always eats. The dining options here are seemingly neverending - everything from a $1.50 hot pretzel from the street vendors to the “menu without prices” fare at the city’s chic eateries.
Tracy and I are fairly simple eaters in a lot of ways. In North Carolina we were happy with a burrito...
August Recap
It’s officially been over a month since we departed 4 Dardanelle in our Budget truck for life in the Big City. We’ve invited you all to join us in this topsy turvy journey through the blog, and it’s been our pleasure to share the experience (both good and bad) with you.
While I certainly appreciate the power of words, I’m also a stat geek at heart so I thought I’d...
Celebrating Labor Day
Happy belated Labor Day, blogaudience (yeah, I’m going to try and make that stick - as Furnas would say, that word is totally boss).
According to our good friend Wikipedia, Labor Day originated here in New York by the Central Labor Union as a “day off for the working citizens.” Sounds like a pretty vague reason for a holiday, but I have admit, I’m a huge fan of the...
