Murphy’s Law
My parents had a framed poster that I remember from growing up - it was about Murphy’s Law. For those unfamiliar, Murphy’s Law is the simple adage that “anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” It’s a rather tongue in cheek and dismal way to look at the world, but if we’re honest, we’ve all felt this way every once in a while.
Over the last few days we’ve had a couple events which led us to believe we were under the jurisdiction of Murphy himself. I won’t go into too many of the details but will share one funny story -
We were heading out to dinner Saturday night and were trying to catch the subway. When we made it down the elevator we suddenly realized that Tracy’s hair straightener may still be plugged in. I decided to go back up to check on it, and as I pulled the keys to our apartment out of my pocket, they slipped out of my hands. In the split seconds that followed, I watched in horror as the keys bounced once on the elevator floor, made a short hop, and fell directly down the less than 1 inch gap between elevator door and floor into the abyss of the elevator shaft.
In other words, Murphy’s Law states that if you drop your keys in the elevator, there’s a 99.9% chance they will be drawn by some unknown magnetic force to an unfortunate death fall to the bottom of the elevator shaft.
Luckily, Tracy had her keys as well, so we made our way to dinner and were delighted when, on Sunday, our super was able to rescue the lost keys from the bottom of the elevator shaft.
So now we have a funny story to share, and Murphy’s Law is left to attack some other poor souls. Like this guy (Steve Zakuani) of MLS’ Seattle Sounders. This has to be the worst miss of a goal I’ve ever seen.
