Life is precious
One of the great blessings of the past year has been Tracy’s job at Trinity. She has met so many wonderful people and been a part of a very vibrant community. One of her many roles is to help the Headmaster, Dr. Chip Denton. Through Tracy, and also through Young Life, I’ve been able to get a glimpse of the school, the community, Dr. Denton’s leadership, and have even become friends with some of the students.
One of those students is Dr. Denton’s son, Chad. He’s a rising junior, and recently turned 16. Chad is a one-of-a-kind kid - full of energy, loud, passionate, unique. I enjoyed getting to know him this year and wish we could have spent even more time together.
Chad almost died on Saturday.
It’s only because he didn’t that I can invoke such abrupt language. Turns out Chad was in a car accident which totalled the family car. It was the family car which flipped numerous times and ended wrong side up against the pavement. Somehow, Chad walked away with only bruises and the toxic memory of how he cheated death.
He is, as his father writes in a blog post, The Boy Who Lived. I shudder to think of the words we would have been forced to write if things hadn’t happened so fortuitously. Dr. Denton’s post is at times gut-wrenching and at all points eloquent and honest. You may not have any connection to the people in the story. But if you have a pulse and care deeply for anyone in this world, I suggest you take a few minutes and give it a read.
Then, go find someone you love and give him a hug. Because life is precious.
