Lazy Weekend

There’s a lot of weekends when we will be super busy either entertaining guests or gallavanting around the city taking in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

This weekend was not one of those weekends.

And it was awesome.

That’s not to say that we don’t love it when we get to entertain and have a full schedule.  It couldn’t be farther from the truth - perhaps our favorite part of living in New York is getting to entertain friends and family who come through.  Yet, this weekend we were able to realize and appreciate the great thrill of doing nothing.

Perhaps I’m being a bit overdramatic, because to say we did nothing is a bit of an overstatement.  In fact, Tracy kicked off the weekend in style on Friday afternoon when she was able to meet up with her good fried Jordan Moody.  Back when Jordan’s last name was Allison, the two played AAU hoops together.  While Tracy and Jordan don’t get to see each other often anymore (Jordan’s in Nashville with husband Craig), they are the type of friends who are able to pick up right where they left off.  After lunch at Penelope (if you’re in the city and looking for a cute delicious place for lunch, we highly recommend), the girls did some walking and window shopping and generally enjoyed catching up on life.  It was only a few hours together, but such a huge perk of living in a place where people come to visit for work and play.

After a lazy Friday night at home, we kicked off Saturday by sleeping in before devouring some homeade pancakes.  We decided to tackle laundry in the basement after breakfast, which is another way of saying we chose to tie ourselves to the building for a few hours.  By the time the laundry was complete, we had polished off College Gameday and the beginning of some college pigskin (how great is it to have football back!), and Tropical Storm Hanna had begun to rear her ugly head in the tri-State area.  The combination of football, rain, and the comfort of the couches was pretty lethal.  As in we’re-only-getting-up-to-refill-drinks-and-go-to-restroom-lethal.

As I said before, it was awesome.

But we weren’t total bums. We actually went to Home Depot mid-day to pick up a microwave.  We thought we had timed it well in terms of rain, but once we walked out of the store for the 2 blocks to the subway, we found out we were wrong.  See below for proof.

We fully intended to leave the house around 8pm for this event through church but then we looked outside at Miss Hanna and her rain that was coming in sideways due to the winds and thought we’d better stay in.  Instead, we watched the other Hurricanes, as in “The U”, as they were dismantled by Tim Tebow and his Gators.

By Sunday we had officially come down with a bad case of cabin fever, and were lucky that the weather cooperated by offering bright blue skies with nary a hint of clouds.  We burned off the sloth buildup from the day before with a long run/walk by the East River.  As we were on our way back, we noticed a huge street carnival on 3rd Avenue, full of vendors and tents of all types.  There were stacks of shoeboxes, guys hawking handbags, and yes, even funnelcakes.  But the best thing we saw:

The Qdoba tent.

We had no idea there was a Qdoba in the city.  As bonafide “quick casual” burrito fans, we made for the tent faster than you can say three cheese queso.  Sure enough, there’s a location on the East side and when we made it to the front of the line we were both able to spin the “wheel of Qdoba fortune” to try and win coupons.  While we missed out on the 10 free burritos slice of the pie, we both made out of the carnival with coupons for a free burrito, as well as a BOGO (that’s buy one get one to the non-discounters out there).

We hadn’t eaten at a chain in more than 6 weeks.  I say that in the past tense because of course we went straight to Qdoba after church tonight and tasted the delectable goodness that is the Queso Burrito. Some would say it’s a waste to eat at such a chain in a city of fantastic resturants.  To them, we’d say - who cares, it’s tasty!

So let’s recap: caught up with old friend, watched football, rain, more football, sun, coupon, queso.

Not a bad weekend.
