Fantasy Bball

Fantasy football has made it mainstream, with 45% of all males in the United States participating in a league (or 3, as the case may be).

What’s not quite as mainstream is fantasy college basketball…or the homemade version a group of us play based solely on the UNC basketball team.  Based upon the first few games of each season, players are given rate factor values in an attempt to normalize their worth.  We then draft a team made up entirely of UNC players, but of different values.  During the course of the season players earn points, which are then multiplied by their respective rate factors - so players who were undervalued at the beginning of the season will hypothetically reap rewards later down the road.  To even things out, we hold a couple “grab bags” during the season which allow us to shake up the roster.

Confused?  You’re not the only one.  I’m currently listening to our fantasy draft and watching via WebEx as we update the spreadsheet in real time.

Gotta love technology, and especially the Excel skills of Curtis Chesney, who is the brains behind the whole operation (though props have to go to Michael Skena for serving as commish for the 2009 season).
